UNSAFE vehicles will be taken off the roads – that was the message from police in a high-profile traffic operation yesterday.
The joint initiative, which included Health and Safety officers, and the Guernsey Border Agency, was aimed at tackling issues such as speeding, construction and use, careless driving, and vehicle safety.
Teams took up positions at Bulwer Avenue, near Mont Cuet, the White Rock, and in 25mph school zones. One group also visited Les Beaucamps High School to inspect scooters.
Some vehicles stopped at random were deemed too unsafe to continue further, but most drivers received a gentle reminder – drive safely and regularly check the condition of brakes and tyres or it could lead to a serious accident.

Why does it take over 10 police officers to stop and check a car? What an utter waste of money. I bet they used their armoured cars too, just incase there was a rampage! We get some many rampages over here, that justifies 1/2 a million pounds spent on some toughened glass.

Why not introduce the MOT and have done with it.

naseby – I don’t think we need something as stringent or expensive as the MOT over here, but perhaps a similar some kind of annual check on the essentials (e.g. bodywork, emissions, lights, brakes) is probably not a bad idea.

This seems like good police work, simple a!
Im all for being critcal of the policing on this Island, officers breaking the laws and getting re-instated, not complying to operational standards on issues like speed gun use, and officers being backed up by senior staff when they have broken rules/guidlines. A claimed “policy of prevention” but an actual policy of “lets wait till they do it and catch em!”
However on the operation reported above, it should be a case of “well done mr plod”, credit where its due a!

Sir Percy, what you are advocating then is an MOT. I have no view on whether to introduce them but MOT’s cover brakes, lights, bodywork, emissions that kind of thing, sorry but what you said made me chuckle, in a nice way not a nasty way
