THE days of the working man’s cafe are more or less over, according to the owner of the building which houses Fryer Tuck’s.

Jonathan Le Moignan said that was one of the reasons why he has applied for planning permission to convert the cafe into a one-bedroom flat.

Mr Le Moignan has owned the Halfway cafe in St Sampson’s for 17 years, but over the last five his various tenants have been struggling to make a decent profit.

‘The trouble is, the cafe used to be pretty lucrative,’ he said.

‘But now it is hard to make a good living out of this business – there isn’t a fortune to be made.’

Despite the demise of Fryer Tuck’s, I don’t agree with Mr Le Moignan that the working man’s cafe’s days are over. OK there may not be enough business to go round any more but the Full English fry-up has still got a place.

I will be sad to see Fryer Tucks go as I’ve enjoyed many a good fry-up in there. Sadly the last few times I tried to go it was closed.

Now that it’s gone, for those of us who don’t want to eat rabbit food all our lives may I recommend the Cornerstone for a decent fry up – and before you ask, no I don’t have a vested interest!

I don’t think the days of this kind of cafe are numbered, just the current tenants. Like Paul says, the place is hardly open any more and I like many stopped going when the quality of their food plummeted a few years ago.

i am sure the right tenant could turn this around and back to the days of it being open from 6am serving simple, decent, well priced food.

There never was a Decent profit to be made in this kind of business. It’s always been about working every hour, but that’s what some people are prepared to do to make a living.

The core business was always workmen wanting a good fry up before work and a hot lunch in the middle of the day. If you start opening at 9 or even 8.30, who the hell are you serving then?

You have to be proactive, whatever your business. The tenants should be opening at 7am latest and sticking a flyer under the wipers of every van and trade vehicle they can find. Reminding people that they’re still there offering hot cheap food. Instead they just seem to opening later and later and wondering where the customer has gone.

I’ll be sad to see it go. I’ve gone there for years. Except last Thursday because it was still shut at 9. Or was it all finished by then?

I think Le Moignan is right with regards to this particular site. Limited parking when others have lots of parking ie Pembroke,Chouet,White Rock is likely to be a big factor and less passing trade than on the bridge a!

That’s the trouble these days, someone starts off a simple cafe with good reasonably priced food. Along comes someone else who sees it’s making good money then ruins everything by allegedly “poshing” up the look, cutting food portions, using cheaper quality ingrediants and hiking up the prices. I remember when a certain west coast tea room that made all it’s cakes, sausage rolls etc was sold on, I said, “I bet the portions get smaller and the prices shoot up” ….. … and didn’t they just! (In time for the tourist season too) … Funny that but at least u were guaranteed a seat unlike when the first owners had it. THAT’S why places end up closing down because people get too greedy. If u keep ur prices and portions real u’ll keep ur custom and u’ll sell more which means u would have less waste. We locals hate being ripped off! Word of mouth is also what makes or breaks a lot of these places over here as a lot of tourists will usually enquire where to get good breakfast/ coffee etc.

The White Rock is the best for a full English breakfast, with proper mugs and great food. The day is not over!

Oh no, I’m going to miss that place! Whilst having it every week isn’t an option if I want to stay in racing snake fitness, I love being able to have a full English once a month. Every time I passed the place, it seemed to be busy.

Going to have to check out Cornerstone, per Paul above.

    Very sad

This was a great location for a cafe decades ago, but it is no longe so.
The neighbourhood has changed. Tourists no longer hang out near there and there is nothing to draw people to the area.
I used to go there, when it was English food, but the last time I went there the food was Malaysian or something. didn’t get what I wanted so never went back.

Nelia’s at the top of Vic Av is an excellent place for a decent, well priced spot of brekkie. Okay, not a full English because it’s Portuguese but they make the best bacon and egg rolls IMO and the continental coffee is so much better than at the average traditional English type caf.

Gary – the Cornerstone is right next door to the Cock and Bull up Cornet Street. Check out their website http://www.cornerstoneguernsey.co.uk/

Unfortunately it would seem they only open from 8am on Thursdays and Fridays so I’ll have to join Jay in recommending The White Rock Cafe for an early bird.

Martino – heartily agree with you about Nelia’s. My venue of choice for an excellent bacon roll for only £2!

Ah man, I love Fryer Tucks! What a bummer, That Philipino guy that was running it was chillin’. and the food, service was excellent. I will support it until it’s gone, and then I also hear from a friend the The Cornerstone is supposed to be getting better and better. Anyone know what their vegetarian menu is like? Fryer Tucks always (99% of the time) has homemade veggie sausages.
