Royal Mail finds camera on the way to Nigerian scammer but insists on sending it
Monday 24th January 2011, 11:30AM GMT.
A CARER was left distraught after she realised a conman had tricked her out of her £900 camera.
But she was dumbfounded when, after she told Royal Mail that she had been conned, it insisted on sending the camera to the scammer anyway.
Earlier this month Dominique Hunter, 22, was excited that her first online seller’s account with internet giant Amazon had attracted the interest of potential buyers.
‘I received emails from a few people wanting to know more about the camera,’ she said.
‘Then I received an email [apparently] from Amazon saying one woman whom I had been in contact with had bought it and I needed to send it right away.’
The person who ordered the camera gave a Somerset address but asked for it to be posted to Nigeria ‘as a wedding present’.
Miss Hunter (pictured) delivered the parcel to Guernsey Post on Thursday 13 January.
But later the next day she realised something was wrong.
‘I tried clicking online on Amazon to say I had dispatched the package but it wouldn’t let me,’ she said.
‘I got in touch with Amazon and they said that nobody had bought it and if they had I wouldn’t have been sent an email.’
Miss Hunter said Amazon told her there was nothing they could do and that she should contact police.
Realising she had been scammed, Miss Hunter said she spoke to a Guernsey Post employee who told her there was nothing they could do.
She also went to the police but, because it was a Saturday, the fraud department was unavailable.
Miss Hunter was forced to wait until Monday when she was finally able to get the help of the police and a Guernsey Post manager who worked hard to locate the package.
But by this time the camera had already left the island.
‘We found out that the package was with Royal Mail in Coventry,’ she said.
Royal Mail confirmed that they had the item but said that because it had already been sent they could not interfere.
‘That’s what made me mad – the fact that they had the package and all the officials knew it was a scam and they still sent it anyway.’
A Royal Mail spokesman said the organisation was concerned to hear about the incident and was investigating.
Miss Hunter’s mother, Diana Winterflood, said her daughter had been badly let down.
‘She was trying to raise money to go to Sri Lanka by selling something she treasured,’ she said.
‘I feel so angry – she went from euphoric from having sold her camera to heartbroken.’
Guernsey Post confirmed its customer services team had been contacted by Ms Hunter earlier this month and was currently looking into the matter.
‘Guernsey Post will be happy to cooperate in any further investigation,’ it said.
A police spokesman confirmed receiving such a complaint. No one from Amazon was immediately available to comment.

Are we supposed to have sympathy? I suggest Ms H plots her revenge via sites such as 419eater.com
Scam the scammers and donate any successes to a worthy cause.

It happens all over the world and it’s not just Royal Mail that won’t stop items, USA post is the same.
Got a bit of sympathy with her but surely in this day and age everybody knows not to deal with Nigeria.
I for one get reminders from my online bank, building society and credit card company warning me not to deal with Nigeria and other known scam countries.
Did she not receive warnings as well?

If I’d been scammed like this I would have kept quiet and not gone to the paper to show how naive I’d been!

“Hallo, I’m calling from your bank… I need your bank account number, your sort code, your pin number…………….?”
I feel sorry for her but this was pretty naïve.
This is exactly the kind of scam that ebay, Amazon etc warn about all the time. Amazon can’t help because it really is nothing to do with them.

Surely you would wait for funds to clear before posting this? As this was supposed to be sold through Amazon i’d thought it worked on the same lines as ebay where you wait for the payment then you post.

Surely the royal mail can be sued because they are in effect aiding and abetting a fraud crime by insisting they deliver the package to the scammer! I feel sorry that her first experience at selling over the internet has resulted in her becoming a victim of these scum who always seem to breed in the same countries
and give them a bad name.

If Royal Mail allowed you to stop and recover sent items it would a Godsend to fraudsters ….. take payment , send goods , send confirmation of posting, recover goods, and repeat with another victim ….

Royal Mail had been notified of a crime in progress and were in a position to do something about it. I agree with Sapphire, surely sending the camera anyway they were aiding and abetting fraud.

CD – I assume that the Royal Mail are able to stop items if the police intervene. Until then, the normal rules would apply that once you have posted something into the system they cannot stop it and it is a criminal offence for anyone to take something out of the system (including reaching into a letterbox to retrieve the letter that you have just put there).
Did she not think it odd to be posting something off without payment? In a strange way, it is sort of heartening that such innocence still exists in this world.

Toby, Understand what you saying but a simple solution……..Fraudsters are unlikely to involve police so the police could intervene and request the package be returned.

Excuse me but i think Guernsey has a long history of scamming and tax evasion practices
