ISLANDERS had what was supposed to be the gloomiest day of the year brightened yesterday when the Guernsey Press was handed £200 and I was sent out to perform random acts of kindness.

The task set by Sure, which had more than £1,000 set aside for the day, was simple – take the money and find a way to put a smile on people’s faces.

In the few hours that followed, islanders were bought lottery tickets, had cups of tea paid for, were treated to lunch, had their dry cleaning paid for and were even bought a round of drinks in the White Hart.

The theory that 24 January is the most depressing day of the year is due to the weather, debt after Christmas and broken New Year resolutions.

what a nice change to have something positive to report.Well done GP & Sure for this. Now wouldn’t it be even better if we could see that happening on a regular basis. Here’s hoping you have set a precedent for change.
