Drinking drivers could end up getting a lesson
Wednesday 26th January 2011, 1:00PM GMT.
THE Home Department is looking at additional measures to tackle drink-driving, according to minister Geoff Mahy.
Deputy Mahy (pictured) said no plans had been put to his board, but education orders – where offenders have to take classes to understand the law – were being considered.
More drink-drivers were arrested this Christmas than during the festive period in 2009. There were 13 arrests, compared with seven the previous year.
Since 2004, there has been a steady decline in the number of arrests for drink-driving.

Lessons should be interesting.
“Hello children. This is a pint of beer, it contains alcohol. This is a car, you can drive this. If you drink too many of this and then drive this you will get nicked”
I suppose the sheer patronising nature of such lessons might put people off drink driving!

Somebody is being misleading here when reporting the figures
A recent local TV news item stated that while there were indeed 13 arrests in December, only 6 were subsequently charged. Big difference eh?
Education orders seem like a good idea, but the actual drink drive limit is about right and does not need reducing

Obviously not…
“More drink-drivers were arrested this Christmas than during the festive period in 2009.”
Anyway, statistical blips aside, driver education never hurts and one would hope that it reduces the number of reoffenders.

Genius.
Are we also going to have lessons for people who don’t know it’s wrong to stamp on people’s heads and view child abuse as entertainment?

Stop playing around drink drivers are a risk to our safety. Take their licenses away for LIFE then they wont offend again. Its simple and works. Come on states stop pussyfooting around and make the law WORK for a change.

Hey pete, while we are at it take licences away from all the speeders, yellow line violators, over time parkers and pensioners… that would save a lot of hassle so why stop at the DIC drivers.

Nobody will have to worry about drink drivers soon with the ideas of putting up drink and petrol prices constantly….
It will be one or the other, most will not afford both.

Valid point guys, there are a lot of people who get totally blotto and think its ok to drive the next morning. If you ask me it should be a sliding scale with 6 months per milligram over 35 in addition to two years.
so get caught with 45 mg/100ml and you get 7 years off instead of 3.
Vote for me at the next election, see my other policies…

I have always been against disqualification for a first offence as people have to get to work. I think its a good idea but the punishers will want a head on a spike of course.

drink/drive limit should be zero. and remove licences for longer. automatic prision sentences too. I have absolutely zero toloerance to this offence.
Make the fines bigger, and sentences longer.
That’s a deterrent in itself. Or we could go back to how it was, where everybody drunk and drove :)

Ali
Thats a bit harsh if you only had a half pint? or do you mean harsher penalties for those who are drunk?.
