THE Castle Emplacement public toilets will be kept open all year round, the Policy Council has decided.

Treasury and Resources’ plans to close the facilities were put on hold after a public outcry at the end of last year and the decision has now been made permanent.

In a meeting yesterday, the Policy Council decided the Public Services Department will now be responsible for maintaining the toilets rather than Treasury.

A PSD spokesman said: ‘The costs of the maintenance will continue as at present, but will in future be reflected in the accounts of Guernsey Harbours.’

    Agreed, Local Guern.

Good decision to put them under the control of Public Services. Not sure why they weren’t there in the first place!

Can I just clear something up? The suggestion to close public toilets was not a suggestion made by States Deputies, many are in fact opposed to such a policy. The suggestion came from those carrying out the fundamental spending review. The Policy Council looked at the proposals and by a majority did not agree with the suggestion that these particular public conveniences should be closed. To date the States has not yet specificly discussed the issue of public toilets.

Deputies may not have made the decision but they, and Guernsey as a whole, have had to take some embarrassing flak over this crass decision

Time to kick somebody’s ar*e and get them to consider the implications of such announcements
