Households face bigger gas bills

Friday 28th January 2011, 2:29PM GMT.

Paul GarlickA 7% RISE in gas prices next month will see households’ bills go up by an average of £87 a year.

Guernsey Gas managing director Paul Garlick (pictured) defended the latest hike – the third in just over a year – attributing it to the increase in the price of crude oil.

‘It is due to world energy prices going up,’ he said.

‘Eventually that filters down to LPG and the price goes up. It is unfortunate.’

“attributing it to the increase in the price of crude oil.” Crude oil has nothing to do with LPG.

Notice how yet again they put the price up part way through a billing quarter …..
So you end up paying more for gas you used before they announced the rise …

@Mr G: Are you sure about that? I was under the impression that it was a by-product of the refining process and therefore has everything to do with the price of crude oil.

Retrospective price increases are not fair to the consumer. Can these regular price hikes be scrutinised by any sort of regulatory body? People are really struggling to pay these bills and many people are actually not heating their homes sufficiently to maintain their health. These are households with infants and elderley.

Mr G, LPG means liquified petroleum gas, derived from the distillation processes of crude oil, so yes it has a lot to do with crude, thats where our gas comes from !

My GranDad had gas, tons of it and my Gran always said that if she could bottle it she’d make a fortune. Seeing the obscene three raises in the retail selling price of gas during the past year she was right!

What I meant was that the price of crude oil hasn’t been increasing this much.
