A WOMAN suffering from Alzheimer’s has been able to bath properly in her own home for the first time in three years after the Guernsey Alzheimer’s Association arranged to have a bath installed.

Maureen Pengelley, 74, is frightened of water going over her head and refused to use the shower, meaning her husband Charlie had to resort to washing her hair in the kitchen sink.

The couple were twice turned down by the Social Security Department for a grant to install a bath, but the Guernsey Alzheimer’s Association stepped in after seeing their story in the Guernsey Press.

Mr Pengelley, also 74, said the bath had increased the quality of life for him and his wife.
