WAYS to further enhance the work experience programme were discussed at the first Guernsey Work Experience Review workshop.

The event, attended by around 30 employers and teachers, looked at ways in which the current format could be improved, but also the areas which already worked well.

Guernsey Work Experience manager Michele Clark said the local body was now working towards UK guideline Quality Standards for Work Experience and was holding the workshop to evaluate the current set-up.

‘We meet most of the targets already so today is about getting ideas on how we can meet all of them.’

I got my first job through a works experience placement, so I am generally very supportive of the idea.

During my career I’ve seen the highs and lows of works experience. Some students were keen as mustard and ended up becoming colleagues; others looked totally disinterested and frankly, would’ve done both themselves and us a favour if they’d stayed at home.

So, although it’s always a good idea to seek to improve the system, the old saying “you get out what you put in” seems highly appropriate.
