Deputies accept £400,000 Brussels cost

A POLICY COUNCIL explanation of the total costs to Guernsey of running a three-man Brussels office was acceptable, backbench deputies have said.

The Policy Council admitted last week that Guernsey would incur costs of £400,000 a year to run the office – a figure matched by Jersey. In 2009, the States earmarked £200,000 towards the office.

Deputies spoken to by the Guernsey Press yesterday confirmed they had no problem with the total sum because the Policy Council would cover the additional costs from within its own budget.

‘I do not think the Policy Council would have come to us asking for £200,000 if it knew the office was going to cost £400,000,’ Deputy Martin Storey (pictured) said.

    Hello

Do we know the objectives and benchmarks by which we can judge the effectiveness of this expenditure?

£400,000 is quite a lot for 3 people.

    Hello

£800,000 is even more, which is what the total is once Jersey have paid their whack.

Although admittedly 5 star hotels and Michelin starred restaurants don’t come cheap these days……….

Jersey has a larger population to serve, they should be paying a fair ratio, instead of splitting it 50 50.

It seems that our deputies feel they need to give the impression to the rest of the world, that Guernsey is rolling in it !

    Hello,

Good question. but you won’t get an answer.
Or not a sensible one. This is a mad waste of money. And for this they close the loos, to save money!!!

Does one hand know what the other is doing?

The more one reads the less confidence one has in the financial nous of Guernsey States.

    And as for the runway!!!!!

    Hello

    Rees

£400,000 annually would fly an awful lot of Eurocrats over to the island for meetings, wining and dining. They’d get a better impression of what we are about than a Powerpoint presentation in a Brussels office block.

    Hello.

That is true, but far too sensible. It could also back-fire.

I guess it is too much to ask but why are the aims and plans of this new and very expensive office not set out and agreed by both Islands?

What happens when they do not agree? Who decides? Or is this pure PR? Just an excuse for jollies. Sounds like it.
