Diversification is key to future

IT IS critical that Guernsey’s economy looks to diversify and that government creates a supportive environment that allows it to happen, according to local business figures.

The Guernsey branch of the Institute of Directors is looking to provide a variety of perspectives on the subject of diversification as part of its 2011 monthly lunch series.

Last month saw Commerce and Employment minister Carla McNulty Bauer and the department’s chief officer, Jon Buckland, talk on the island’s current status and strategy.

Next week sees Chris Brock, founder and chief executive of research and benchmarking specialist Island Analysis, speak on other islands’ approaches and experiences in diversifying their own economies.

    Tourism and agriculture used to be a priority and a useful way to make the island a nice place to live.
    Covering our greenspaces with airport and moving the approach lights into the rural area plan isn’t going to help us diversify our economy.
