Just think. There are some Police officers here whose job it is to spend hours wading through this stuff to prepare a case

Then there is the prosecutor, the defence and the Magistrate whose jobs also entail having to watch this degrading material

Can any of them put it completely out of their minds when they go home to their families?

I’m glad I’m just a simple public toilet cleaner even though I am currently out of work due to the black hole

Can’t think of a worse job for the police and the prosecution service, and even the advocate of the defendent, having to wade through that imagery as part of their job. It must be horrendous.

I agree with Andy, we have to ask why. Without that how is he supossed to be rehabilitated, and he needs to be. Otherwise it’s likely that in 3 years he will be out and doing the same thing again.

IF this object beneath contempt has OCD, then therapy can help that. OCD can be a seriously debilitating disorder….

IF he was indeed, abused himself, then yes, the abused can sometimes become the abuser….

IF he is an alcoholic (perhaps because of either of the above) then this too will certainly not have helped him to make healthy choices…….

HOWEVER (and it is a BIG HOWEVER)….

this does NOT explain why ANY sane individual (he hasn’t blamed insanity yet, though I’m sure his advocate’s working on that one…) doesn’t know that getting off on looking at pictures of children being horribly sexually abused is anything but utterly sick and wrong, so why does ‘why’ matter so much?!

Most know it’s wrong (which is why, once caught, they bleat on about their regrets and blah blah blah), so what exactly is rehab going to teach them that they don’t already damned well KNOW?!

Many people suffer from the above and still manage to live decent lives.

Perhaps it’s about time we accepted that in these civilised times of oh-so political correctness, there are still things that cannot simply be conveniently categorised and dealt with accordingly, and that perhaps, as the many repeat offenders of this vile crime show (and sometimes admit), they CANNOT be rehabilitated, and that they WILL reoffend, given half the chance….

if we all want to be so very modern, liberal and understanding, how about we extend that to the helpless, nameless VICTIMS here?

    Well said Scarlett,

There cannot be anybody out there that has any doubts that involvement in activities of this nature is completely unacceptable.

It scares me that there are people out there, however good their intentions, that genuinely believe that sexual offenders and paedophiles can be rehabilitated….and would seem to be comfortable with people being put at risk to prove the point.

Even more scary is the recent ‘human rights’ issues rumbling along that will probably now mean that offenders cannot be put on a register for life.

Why should anybody that has committed offences of a serious nature be allowed to disappear into the ether a few years down the line?

There seem to be more and more of these cases coming to light in Guernsey at the moment and it sickens me to see the headlines.

it’s endemic in the islands, Karen, all an inconvenient truth that’s been going on for years, covered up as much as possible by the establishment.

I knew a seasoned social worker who tried her best to get the most awful, VERY well proven abuse cases to Court over here (including one involving a colleague), and she was stopped from doing so virtually every time, until she left in utter disgust, saying (sadly, as I truly love our isles) that this is possibly one of the most evil places she has ever worked in.

What amazes me is the length of time it takes before finally convicting these disgusting people I know this having lived next to a now convicted peudo whose case was postponed many times due to his plea changing. He was free to carry on and walk our streets freely for 18 months. During this time, he was kept by the States, he went to places where kids were and to add further insult he is not even local and remains in our prison protected. I say send him back and name and shame! Guernsey is no longer a safe place for our kids

I agree to some extent with Scarlett. I certainly do not believe that activities ‘of this nature’ are in any way, shape or form, acceptable, however; I think it’s all well and good describing these people as ‘disgusting’ and slapping them with a prison sentence, but this does not solve the problem. Prevention is better than cure, not that there is currently any viable ‘cure’ available. The majority of paedophiles are deeply ashamed of what stimulates them sexually and I don’t think you’d find many who wouldn’t choose to be different given the choice. Behaviour exhibited by paedophiles usually comes about because of childhood abuse (or just the way in which someone is raised) which can, in some cases, be exacerbated by certain genetic predispositions. The way in which most observers view this behaviour is almost as if the individual has made an active choice to become sexually interested in children. A devolved version of this kind of thinking is the belief that being a homosexual is a choice. Sexual drive effects every aspect of our lives and in a lot of people it is impossible to ignore. Society should be conducting further research into what kind of psychological imprinting leads to this form of behaviour and what can be done to control or reverse it. It is the emotional and reactionary approach to the issue which holds back any progress towards it’s prevention.

This would most certainly be illegal but I wonder who might put their head above the parapet to make an official complaint …

I presume MI5 and MI6 employ a certain number of boffins to carry out technical work of a sometimes dubious and deniable nature

Call me Dave could win a few votes by directing them to introduce a virus into any personal computer which logs on to any of these dozens of filth pedalling websites
