Call for States to shed seven seats

states buildingTHE number of deputies could be reduced from 45 to 38, if the States agrees.

Deputies Barry Brehaut and Carol Steere have placed an amendment to the States Assembly and Constitution Committee’s report on island-wide voting.

This month the States already faces five proposals for some form of island-wide voting.

The Brehaut-Steere amendment simply recommends reducing the number of seats by one in each of the seven electoral districts as a step towards island-wide voting.

    Eight days still to go and we are overwhelmed with amendments

    Some members are obviously just not getting it

    NOTHING LESS THAN FULL ISLAND WIDE VOTING WILL DO!

    For a moment I thought it said “Cull” not “call” …. a radical, not entirely elegant, but effective solution to the problem ….

    How about equally sized electoral districts returning an equal number of candidates ? And one man one vote ( especially if we go Island wide )? Why do we have to have one vote for each seat available ?

    If everybody only had one vote we could end up with somebody who is already very popular ,such as the CM, hogging all the votes,and another person who for instance tried to scupper the overwhelming incinerator ‘No’ vote would struggle to get any support at all
