SIGNS on the Grandes Rocques Bar & Bistro, formerly the Wayside Tavern, clutter the front of the property and damage the character of the area, the Environment Department told a planning appeal tribunal yesterday.

Director of planning control services Jim Rowles said permission had been granted for one sign, not three.

But licensee Bob McKenzie claimed the department had treated him unfairly as other premises in the area had similar signs.

The approved sign was the one giving the name. The two that were not allowed advertised the types of food and beer available, Mr Rowles said.

The panel’s decision is expected in around 21 days.
