Campaigners for widows’ rights call on Social Security for changes

CAMPAIGNERS fighting for a change in a law they claim has left widows struggling financially have told Social Security to correct the problem or risk further action.
Deputies Barry Paint and Jane Stephens met the department’s board to spell out their case.
‘We had a very amicable meeting with Social Security. We sent them a view of the matter and political comments three or four days ago, which they appreciated,’ said Deputy Paint (pictured).
‘They were very receptive to what we were saying. Obviously they are working from the law as it stands, but we believe the law wasn’t properly addressed in 2004 with regard to widows’ pensions.’

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
My understanding is that a huge majority of Guernseymen, being, if you like, main provider in that scheme of things, as they saw it, went down the traditional route, they provided for the household, paid all the bills, looked after the finances, etc, whilst their spouse looked after the household, bought up their children, had big meals ready on the table, 3 times, every day, and so forth. Once pension decisions were made, the main provider opted for the most equitable route, taking a higher pension, with no due consideration for their dependant spouse, so complacent. I wish Deputies Stevens and Paint very best of luck on their quest, would like to hear some sensible comments from Deputy K, who is much more aware of these concerns.
