A slimmed down version of the Leale’s Yard project, which will transform the area around St Sampson’s Bridge, has been given outline planning permission.

The multi-million pound scheme includes homes and parking as well as shops.

Environment minister Deputy Peter Sirett said yesterday that the department was satisfied with information about the size and height of the buildings which had been planned for Leale’s Yard, which was sufficient to grant outline permission.

‘All representations made by the public were carefully considered and positive, detailed discussions were held with the applicants during the consideration of the application, resulting in a decrease in the size of the buildings and the retail space of the scheme from the original submission,’ he said.

Could be plenty of jobs available for our unemployed youth!

@ray no there won’t. All the building work will be carried out by UK firms using their own labour and all the additional jobs will go to temporary foreign workers becuase the work harder (according to some employers)

Aren’t there loads of empty shops in town? The foreign landlords shouldn’t charge such high rents, then we’d have a town full of shops.

If we have yet another shopping centre at Leales’ Yard, what will become of the ten or so shops already empty at The Bridge? I know there are 7 Charity shops already, which are not being maintained as if they were viable business premises.
Also there are so many empty shops in St Peter Port Town Centre where people can no longer pay such high rents.
What will happen to the empty shells and eventual crumbling fabric in our skeleton Town?
Surely our States should concentrate on regenerating existing stocks of shop and business buildings, and perhaps build much-needed inexpensive housing at Leales?

@rachel The reason so many shop are empty is becuase of the uncertainty surrounding Leales yard.

The shops there have all been on short term leases. Plue who want to carry out a large amount of work on a shop down there when theres a chance its all going to be torn down

cheesed off – (answer arnald’s question – exactly how many do not want to work? your usual scatter gun attack reeks of its usual prejudice and ignorance).

the coop thing is good, especially for the very many bods who cannot access the incaccessible places in our main shopping centre. it looks pretty but its a nightmare and a no-go area for anyone who has any mobility problem. the new coop must take advantage of that.

meanwhile if town shops cannot adapt, so be it. and maybe when all the buildings are empty, the greedy landlords (deputies with interests anyone?)will consider taking the foot off the neck of the retailers, maybe.

Bring it on I say, anything has got to be better than the Bridge now, it is like a poor town with little employment in the area, not very inspiring, I have always said that St Sampsons marina should be partly a visitors marina to give extra customers to the shops and perhaps have a market on the Crocq on a Satutrday morning giving it a bit of a French touch, it certainly needs something and could be very much like Paimpol in Brittany if this was done.
