Deputies ‘hoodwinked’ over runway, claims campaigner
Friday 25th February 2011, 11:30AM GMT.
DEPUTIES were hoodwinked into rushing a decision that effectively ruled out alternative runway technology, an anti-airport extension campaigner has claimed.
Martyn Dorey said that although the States on Wednesday voted for the compulsory purchase of land needed to extend the runway end safety areas, the group would not give up the fight – in fact, it could even push for a judicial review.
The vote approved the purchase of a field owned by the Le Messurier family by 29 to 12, despite pressure from the group of concerned residents to consider using Emas (Engineered materials arrestor system) – an alternative that would rule out the need to buy the land. But Mr Dorey said just because they had lost the vote, it did not mean the debate was over.
‘I think the first thing we’ve got to do is have a discussion about the best way to proceed,’ he said.

We have one airport.
Getting off this island is costly enough.
This is not an environmental argument, it is about strategic importance.
Mr Dorey and co, you didn’t have much support in the island, you didn’t in the States.
Just admit it, and save ALL taxpayers money fighting your legal action, you lost.

Well said Sarah. A minority tried to change a decision that was talen for the good of the island as a whole, and failed.
Accept it and get on with your lives. Carrying on this pointless fight will just cost ALL of us money and simply delay the inevitable.

Yes, well said Sarah and The Truth. Please spare us the added time and expense caused by a vocal minority trying to subvert the will of our democratically elected parliament through some sort of spurious legal campaign. Just face the facts, it’s going to happen and the sooner it does the better!

The delaying tactic was lost by 31 -11
The field purchase went through by 29 -12
The road closure was passed by 32 -10
Quite a strong message that this project should proceed from our elected members, who of course purport to represent ALL islanders
I’ve just looked up ‘Sedition’. Perhaps those who are still determined to do whatever it takes to disrupt this lawful vote should look it up too
Not very impressed with Deputy Barry Paint abstaining. You’re there to make decisions one way or the other Mr Paint
You must know about decision making .. You decided to force several of your parishioners to change the name of their road against their will

Move it? Resurface it? Lengthen it?
GET ON WITH IT !!!
3 years so far attempting to make/get a decision. Take much longer and fossil fuels will have dried up so planes won’t be flying any more.

Ray – my gut feeling is to agree with you however I will reserve judgement until I know the reasons for his abstention.
Abstaining is a decision of sorts as it can affect the vote, especially when it’s a tight call. It can also be an honest admission that someone doesn’t fully understand what’s being voted on….and quite honestly, considering the claims, counter-claims, accusations etc. that have been flying around this particular debate it’s enough to make your head spin!
