ST SAVIOUR’S pub regulars are stepping up a campaign to restore their local hostelry.

Last orders were called at the St Saviour’s Tavern in 2007 when it was closed and earmarked for redevelopment – but former regular Corinne Connolly said she would not give up without a fight. She is leading the campaign to reinstate the ‘Ritz’, as it was known by locals, and said supporters did not want it to become another ‘too-late’ scenario where the island loses more of its history and character.

‘So many islanders would like to once again see our old Tavern building standing proudly where it should be, at its original home.’

She said they had to preserve Guernsey’s history and protect its heritage for future generations.

Come on people. Do you know how much it going to cost to rebuild or do up that pub. Just think how many pubs have closed down over the years. It cost to much to have a pub like that. the rent would be well into the thousands and then you have staff, that a lot of beer and wine to drink just to pay for that.

p.s If these people want to the pub that much, there should buy or rent it.

    Can you hear that?

That’s the sound of nobody caring whether your booze parlour reopens to keep our doctors and police busy or not.

Some of your comments amuse me, some don’t, and some are just confrontational and offensive. I have no feeling regarding the Tavern either (I don’t drink) but the regulars did and I don’t recall it being a drunken unruly place. Put the boot on the other foot, if your house was compulsory purchased would I care? Not one bit. Bet you would though.

Donkey Doo, thanks very much, I try. I have to say though, I’m surprised it this comment you’ve taken offense at.

This place closed down because it was not a viable business, if it was making a decent profit you can be sure it’d still be there.

There is no right in law to have a boozer on your doorstep, and indeed I have issues with pubs in general as they all cost us money for looking after the detritous they expell every night (be it after on nights excess or 40 years worth).

Oh and BTW, I love you saying they’re still “regulars” when the place hasn’t been open for 4 years!

    Eh

Why doesn’t one of these “regulars” apply for a licence for their own home if the are so desperate to have a pub on their doorstep?
