Welcome for Leale’s Yard from most on Bridge

Monday 28th February 2011, 2:29PM GMT.

Leale's Yard WSTHE Leale’s Yard development will help regenerate the Bridge, according to some St Sampson’s business proprietors.

Traders hope the new shops and homes development will encourage more people to go to the area and visit their own stores.

‘This area badly needs regeneration and that part is an eyesore,’ said Pound World Plus owner Nigel Staples.

‘From the point of view of the regeneration of this area it will be a good thing, but if I had a Town business I would be concerned about a possible downturn in trade.’

Time to end the talking and begin the long awaited regeneration of a depressed and shabby part of the island that hasn’t moved on since the 1960s. I know, I can remember!

The best shop on the Bridge at one time was Leale’s Hardware Store. It was like the Gabriels of tools, chain, string, paraffin, screws etc.

A small boy once went in there and asked for and got served three copper nails in a brown bag

I know because I was that small boy

I don’t remember that far back Ray. I do recall as a small boy going to Tozer’s to get my jamboree bag but that was then and this is now. If I’m honest I’d like to see that entire shop front area razed to the ground and replaced with brand new modern buildings like along the Town esplanade. I’d also like to see Marine and General (what an eyesore) given a new home at Longue Hougue or somewhere more suitable. Oh, and a new, bigger electricity cable link with France so we can get rid of those awful power station chimneys once and for all. The co-op plan is a good first step though.
