A 92-YEAR-OLD woman driver had a lucky escape at the Model Yacht Pond yesterday.

Just before 4pm, her Daihatsu Charade rode over large concrete blocks, it is believed at speed, and became stuck in the scaffolding dinghy park after first reversing into a passing van.

The car came to rest only feet from the Old Lifeboat Slip.

The woman, who was unhurt, but shaken, was taken to hospital to be assessed. There were no reports of anyone else being injured.

I feel sorry for the lady in question and am glad she isn’t injured. What more of a reason do we need to now introduce an aptitude test for elderly drivers?

There could have very easily been a walker between the car and the boulder that bought that car to a standstill.

You never see this from youngsters.

Bart – I agree with you, I’m glad she is safe but it could so easily have been different.

I note from http://www.gov.gg that drivers with a group 2 category (C, D, D1) licence have to take an annual medical after 65 years.

Perhaps a similar requirement should be imposed for drivers of cars after, say, the age of 70?

This isn’t disrespectful to the elderly, it’s just plain common sense and accepting reality.

Knowing how frail my grandparents were around that age I couldn’t have imagined them driving. I appreciate others can though and those that remain capable of driving will be free to do so, those that can’t will be taken off the roads for theirs (and our) safety.

There’s a simple solution though people wont like it, retest every driver after six years, then reduce it to three after 60 and to one after 70.

Couple this with medicals and eye tests. After all eveyone ages at a different rate, but driving is the most dangerous thing we do on a regular basis. To test people only once in their lifetime is ridiculous when you think of it.

Hi Ray, not sure about my street cred in a silver Daihatsu charade. Anyway, as I said in another thread, I have no plans to return to 4 wheels but thanks for the idea anyway!
