Island monitors UK May holiday changes
Monday 7th March 2011, 2:29PM GMT.
GUERNSEY will monitor, but does not have to follow, plans to move the May Day public holiday.
The UK Government has outlined a proposal to switch the May bank holiday in England to either to St George’s Day on 23 April or Trafalgar Day on 21 October.
A spokesman for Commerce and Employment said that while the responsibility for designating public holidays in Guernsey rested with the department, it required a States Report to be submitted to amend the Public Holidays Ordinance 1994.
‘Guernsey does not follow decisions on public holidays by the UK authorities automatically and for public holidays to be designated here – either as a one-off, such as to mark a royal wedding, or to change the date of an existing public holiday – requires the States to agree to amend local legislation.’

October sounds like a good idea to me – April is hardly worth the effort of changing it. Can we just have an extra one on October please and keep May? Pretty please!!!! :-)

May in Guernsey is a great month – all the flowers are out, it’s the beginning of summer, there’s Liberation day, and a bank holiday!
Why are the UK changing it anyway? If they want to celebrate St George’s Day, why can’t they just have an extra holiday rather than moving an existing one? I don’t think we should change with the UK either way – St George or some English battle hardly warrants a day of for us.
I’d rather have St Michael’s day off – September 29th – as he is the patron saint of Normandy.
