Carey Olsen’s pan-island employment team has recently presented breakfast briefings on managing change to over 100 HR professionals and senior managers in Guernsey and Jersey.

The team explored the practical application of the law in a change management context with particular focus on changes to terms and conditions of employment and the management of redundancy programmes.

Speakers Huw Thomas and Rachel Richardson explained the legal risk management benefits which flow from ensuring that a proper planning process is adopted and followed.

Mrs Richardson said: “Due to the current financial climate there is greater pressure than ever on employers to engage in changes which impact on their employees.  It is important for employers to be aware of the risks that changing the working practices of employees or the structure of an organisation may bring about so that they can plan accordingly.”

“Times of change can increase the pressures on both employers and employees.  Employees are now more aware of their rights and when the job market is tough people are more willing to take action against their employers if they feel they have been unfairly treated,” said Mr Thomas.

Mrs Richardson added: “Planning for change can help in identifying, assessing and minimising the risks of change.  The right legal advice is a key part of that process.”
