VAZON Bay Cafe’s latest planning application has received heavy backing from its customers.
Plans were submitted to Environment on 21 January to extend the front and sides of the premises, change the windows, create a terrace at first-floor level and install raised decking at the rear of the building with a path next to the sea wall.
The latter two changes would provide the opportunity for alfresco seating with views of Vazon beach – the main reason cited by customers as to why the plans should be allowed to go through.
It is the third attempt to redevelop the cafe.

What I don’t understand is they turn the application down for Vazon but they allowed Pembroke to be turned into what it is now a bunker look alike. Maybe that’s where the problem lies it doesn’t look enough like a bunker.

They should knock it down there would be more room to park then.

The Vazon Bay Cafe is a massive focal point on the west coast for so many activities and it is a massive shame that the planning process has dragged on. The original plans would have provided something to be proud of for locals and also for visitors. When you compare what Jersey has done down on their west coast, the people who objected seem pathetic.
Good luck to Nick Percy! Planners – pass the plans – you know it makes sense!

There are two reasons I stopped going to the cafe.
I did not like the food.
I did not like getting a mouthful of exhaust as I sat eating. The proposed patio will solve the latter problem.
With views of the beach and Bay, I would stop in for a coffee.

I haven’t seen the plans myself but the alfresco/terrace idea sounds great, and as the current building looks like a decaying bus terminus any development has got to be an improvement!

What effect would the frequent waves and spray have on the planned terrace?
Nevertheless it would surely be a hit for sandracing fans.

I can’t understand this reluctance on the part of planners to let some of our coastal areas be upgraded.
We’ve got some lovely picturesque stretches of coastline…and this isn’t one of them. It’s our longest bit of beach and most of it is like a barren wasteland.
Without turning it into a theme park, a good attractive beachfront cafe, a children’s play area and a nice promenade would really uplift this stretch. And not just for the tourists, but for us what lives yur!

I agree 100% that it should be redeveloped as an asset for the community. Why do we not have a cafe like crab shack on St Brelades bay in Jersey.

I Have been visiting Guernsey since I was born. I am now 47. Vazon bay is not a wasteland. It has been ‘my’ beach always. You have to open your eyes to see what is there. It is beautiful.
And the beauty of Vazon is that it is as nature intended it.
As for the cafe. Well that is something else that the beauty of it is in the eye of the beholder. Mum and I bless it regularly when we are there. Nothing like a good mug of tea when the wind is blowing and the sea is coming over.

The current building looks like an extension of the toilet block around the back. I fail to see how any redevelopment could be anything but an improvement.

the current cafe (no disrespect to the owner) looks dreadful. It is such a lovely area, and especially with the new flash apartments that have replaced other dreadful landmark, it needs demolishing. And what about the poor surf school – having to operate out of a van? That is not aesthetically pleasing either. Surely they could be incorporated into a smart cafe/beach shop/toilets/promenade.
