AFTER watching his car come close to going up in flames at Salerie Corner, Mike Cluer wants something done about vehicles which are abandoned there.

The 65-year-old, who has lived opposite the car park with his wife, Chris, for three years, has been getting increasingly concerned with the way the car park is being abused.

He has written to the Environment Department and the police for more than a year about the problem, but he said that they could not deal with it.

Senior parish constable Barry Cash said they were aware of the problem, and he had met Environment’s traffic department last week to work out a strategy for the area.

    The Truth

Is it now compulsory that every bloke who gets in the press moaning about something inconsequential has to wear hi-viz?

In the main report he says it could be a catastrophe! Not seen the pictures from Japan then mate? THAT is a catastrophe, not a few cars at the Salerie!

The problem in this area (fishermans key part) is that it simply does not seem to be covered by any disc zone signs…I parked there a couple of weeks back and spent tens mins checking all the time zone signs to work out how long I had only to come to the conclusion that it just wasn’t part of the regulated zones….hard to see what laws anyone abandoning a car there is flouting, apart from moral ones….

I believe this parcel of land is owned as part of a Fief.

It is entrusted to those, originally local fisherman, that moor boats at the Salerie. It’s an area for maintenance & laying up during the winter season.

This is a civil matter. Little will be achieved without expensive legal costs. This could well turn out to be very similar to Cobo. The difference being nobody has laid claim to it.

    Yet!

It seems to me that anybody who owns a car in Guernsey, is ABOVE the law!

Police and Environment “can’t” or WON’T, do anything about it ??

Forget the fact that the fishermen cant park there for the moment is this abandoning of cars a sort of fly tipping? surely the police must know who the cars belong to so why is nothing done?

John, you are right , it is flytipping.

in fact one of the owners of one car in question is asking for anyone to take it away for him as in his own words the police are clamping down on “uninsured cars”, and as there are no signs saying Private Property the guy stands to lose his licence for at least a year for having an uninsured vehicle on a public “road”

Mr Cluer is lucky that he now lives opposite a place where he can park his car for free. The only problem with that is ,everyone else can park there too!.Paid parking could put an end to this.

Can’t the “Cobo Boys” pretend they’re “Salarie Boys” for a day and clear these wrecks?

Then perhaps they could be “Saltpans Boys” the following day and do the same down there.

Why are the Police and/or the constables too spineless to do anything about these problems?

Phil, the land is actually a free zone and there a few around the Island, so in fact anyone can park their car there for any period. The Police therefore have nothing to charge the driver with as they are not breaking law.

The issue is down to the Environment Dept, hence nothing will get done.

There are only a couple of people using this area as their own.
They stopped letting people lay their boats up but allow people to store their cars there?.
Some are wrecks, some just a part of a collection and some for storeing things in.
