‘Capitulating to airport firemen is damaging us’
Monday 21st March 2011, 2:29PM GMT.
GIVING in to the airport firefighters two years ago has damaged the island just as the Public Sector Remuneration Committee warned it would, according to a former member.
An industrial tribunal panel last week awarded Town firefighters a 4.5% rise after the airport firefighters received 7.8% in 2009 when the airport was forced to close.
Deputy Tony Spruce (pictured) said that the PSRC had predicted that would happen.
All PSRC members resigned over what they saw as interference from Chief Minister Lyndon Trott and subsequent agreement to the firefighters’ demands.

Cheers Lyndon. Just what we needed!

I am Sorry Mr G but that is not true.
The independent fire Fighters tribunal found that the Chief Minister did nothing more than tell the AFF’s to return to work. The settlement was made on the advice of the Public Services department.

All it shows that PSRC is was not fit for purpose tehn, is not fit for purpose now and never will be. The whole issue of public sector pay needs to be reformed.

Yet another example of a short self serving political memory. Did not an Independent Inquiry into the Airport Fire-fighters dispute lay the blame for it utterly and totally on the PSRC and exonerate the Fife fighters.
Nobby hit the nail on the head.

It was forcast at the time that this is exactly what would happen and it appears Tony Spruce was right

It will keep happening as long you have a situation where the body who is responsible (and the politicians who control it)for public sector pay will not recognise that certain jobs have changed beyond all recognition from the days when everyone who works for the States can be classed as ” manual workers”.
Of coarse Tony Spruce was right, there are many States workers whose pay should have been reviewed years ago but it is beyond the will and wit of the politicians to do it.
So it doesn’t take a genious to see that so long as the politicians want States workers on the cheap these kind of situations will keep arising.
