Go-slow is no-go at Environment

Guernsey lane re: speed limitsREDUCING the speed limit to 20mph for most island roads would be ridiculous, an Environment Department board member has said.

And four out of the department’s five board members have already effectively ruled out the suggestion of a 20mph ‘island limit’ instead of the current 35mph.

An Environment-led working group – made up of two civil servants from the department, two from Public Services and a police inspector – conducted a review of Guernsey speed limits and suggested a variety of changes.

These included reducing the general island limit to 20mph and cutting speed limits around schools only during set times. There was some discussion of increasing the limit on a handful of major roads to 40mph but no firm suggestion.

Why did they bother getting a report done? Yet another waste of islander’s money.

There maybe hope for the Environment Department yet. Although I am not holding my breath just at the minute :)

This is way I laugh every time States members and civil servants say with a straight face that they are trying to save money.

How much did this waste of time cost us?

    £££££££££’s

    Not happy.

They did it because in 2006 Environment were told to ‘go away and come back with a comprehensive report and strategic review of the island’s speed limits’

In hindsight it would have been so much better if they had just been told to ‘go away’

Waste of time and money – agreed. But at least they had the common sense to see it for the ridiculous idea it is. It could have been worse, they could have decided to go ahead with it wasting a hell of a lot more money.

to be fair, the committee probably only met twice over a cup of coffee and a biscuit. I doubt it would have cost much.

the time spent by people commenting upon the various threads on Your Shout would have added up to a lot more!

We should all be thankful they actually had the sense to do an “In House” report and decided for once at least to “save” money by not employing some overpriced overrated consultants.

Why don’t we all stop paying taxes until the states decide to stop wasting taxpayers money?
