THE mother of a disabled child who had two open-heart operations as a baby is fighting to save Southampton General Hospital children’s cardiac unit.

Laura Margetts, 28, is urging islanders to sign a local petition in support of the Southern Daily Echo’s Have a Heart Campaign.

Mrs Margetts’ daughter, Yvie, who is now three, was born with a heart defect. She also suffers from neurological problems and has now developed sclerosis, a type of curvature of the spine.

When Yvie was aged just 11 months, she had her first heart operation at the Southampton unit.

What the article fails to highlight is the unit in Southampton was ranked second highest performing unit in England. Not only will this have a devastating affect on us in terms of our ability to have Guernsey children to get to specialist heart surgery but also if the unit closes we are likely to receive a lower standard of care than we current experience.

Please sign the petition and get your friends to sign the petition which can be downloaded from the Southampton Echo website.

    Thanks
