Cut speed limit and number of accidents will increase
Monday 28th March 2011, 2:29PM BST.
REDUCING the speed limit to 20mph would cause more accidents, a motoring enthusiast said yesterday.
Members of the Guernsey Classic Vehicle Club, who met yesterday for their monthly drive, said the idea was ridiculous.
They said there was nothing wrong with the current limits and did not understand why it was being suggested to change them.
‘I think they should just leave it alone,’ said classic vehicle club president Mike Grantham (pictured).

I would definitely agree with Mr.Grantham. I can well imagine lowering the speed limits would cause more frustration and dangerous overtaking manoeuvres.

its the amount of cars on the roads they should be dealing with ,
thats the problem ,
much too many lage cars and jeeps .these big engine cars are wasted on guernsey ,see to that and you will solve many problems ,

Typical ‘petrolhead’ response.
A lower speed limit would not cause more accidents, idiots ignoring said limits and undertaking ‘dangerous overtaking manoeuvres’ would cause more accidents.

If the speed limit was reduced to 20mph everybody would have to travel at the same speed as the typical “H” car in the summertime!

As the Environment have said nothing is changing why are we still reading about it, let the subject drop there was no need for this report.

Scarpia – Typical ‘petrolhead’ response.
Classic Vehicle Club – petrolheads? you’re having a giraffe aintcha. These antiques are owned and driven by people who despise safe, well equipped, reliable cars with brakes made from material other than biscuit tin lids. Thier engines would be out performed by your average lawnmower, their drivers dream of getting a speeding ticket on a windy day downhill.
They are no more enthusiasts of speed than my tortoise Cyril.

In response to Kilroy’s comments reference ‘H’ drivers. I can only say that as a regular visitor (and ‘H’ driver), in my opinion driving standards and driving courtesy on the island has fallen. I have been driving all over the UK for some 47 years (relatively accident free) as a professional driver, but unfortunately driving on Guernsey country lanes has now become a white knuckle ride making the M25 during the rush hour ‘a breeze’. Maybe driver Kilroy should just calm down and have a nice cup camomile tea and give ‘H’ drivers who may not be that familiar with Guernsey’s roads (and are trying to safeguard their hire car’s insurance excess) a little more time – as the probably more experienced resident island drivers use to.

TT, have you got something against classic cars? I think you`d find some of them can go rather fast. Besides, they are far prettier than the modern day rubbish.
In any case, the most dangerous part of any car is the driver`s brain!

TT – I think companies such as Mercedes might just disagree with you, My “classic car” is still regarded as being the best made car ever, and with 259,000 miles on the clock the ABS brakes are better than most Jap “biscuit tins”, the air con keeps my frozen food frozen on a summers day, the cruise control works at any speed above 25mph and when recently boot bumped by an almost new fiesta outside Forest Rd Garage the new car required towing away and I had to nip up to Jacksons to get a touch up stick because of the minor scrape on the bumper.
The only problem with my old car is the fact that at 35mph the other spare 102mph I have is going to waste
Slep – not quite right , the only REALLY dangerous part is the nut behind the wheel :@) usually found in cheap nasty little tinboxes that will be in the recycle bin in 5 or 6 years time hehehe *joke*

Regarded as being the best car by who – the people who bought it. The reason the Fiesta required towing away is because modern cars have pedestrian friendly crumple zones, imagine the damage your tank would have done to a pedestrian.
So you car has a top speed of 137mph, almost as fast as a modern family car then.Ford Mondeo 2.0 diesel 0 – 60 8.9 seconds top speed 137. Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 diesel 0 – 60 8.9 top speed 135mph, wow you can beat a diesel Vauxhall and match a 2.0 diesel Mondeo – impressive.
And that’s the problem with classic car enthusiasts, they are coffin dodgers who think the dream cars of their youth can in any way compare with an average modern car.
Of course if we are going to compare like for like with modern performance cars. My 10 year old Porsche 996tt has 450bhp, does 0-60 in 4 seconds and will reach a top speed of 196mph. And it has eye popping brakes, stability control systems, crash protection and a whole host of features that Flash Gordon was playing with when you were watching the serials at the local Odeon.
Shame you missed the boat, the UK government were giving £2000 for people to scrap their aging junkheaps against a new car.
