CONTRACTUAL difficulties have been blamed for preventing safety improvements at pedestrian crossings.
Plans to improve signage, road markings and traffic calming measures were outlined in a report on speed limits, which was conducted by an Environment Department-led working group.
The report, which is now subject to public consultation, said the Environment board had approved the improvements to street lighting at all crossing points and the installation of tactile paving.
But due to contractual difficulties with Guernsey Electricity, the project was delayed. However, Guernsey Electricity said it was unaware of any delays.

That crossing does need a light, but what they really need to do is educate taxi drivers that when someone is standing at the crossing that is not an excuse to speed up and drive straight through.
I can not tell you how many times I have seen this happen and the next time it does I will take that reg number and I will report it!

This is barmy.
Guernsey Electricity is owned by the States. There shouldn’t be any problems that impinge of public safety.
Needed – just good old fashioned common sense.

I’m all for safety but the majority of people don’t bother with the crossing in fountain street they cross either end of the road, earlier today I watched a family cross the road 25 metres down the road then walk up towards the crossing. maybe there should be 2 one either end of Fountain Street.

Totally agree with you Stephen John. This is one time where P B Falla’s now (in)famous catchphrase “another Guernsey shambles” wouldn’t be out of place.
What makes it even more barmy is that Guernsey Electricity are apparently “unaware of any delays” – talk about the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.
Surely it’s just a case of both parties getting together and sorting it out? Even with civil service bureaucracy this shouldn’t take more than a day.
