‘Crossing safety must not just follow a fatality’

Floral tributes were left near the Victoria Avenue crossing after a man was killed there in 2002.
A FATALITY has to happen before improvements are made at pedestrian crossings, a road safety group has said.
Living Streets secretary Pat Wisher was speaking about a delay that has prevented improvements to street lighting at crossing points.
Excluding private crossings, there are 39 zebra crossings, but only 10 of those were marked as reasonable in a survey conducted by the pedestrian group in 2003.
It was carried out after a fatality on the Victoria Avenue crossing in 2002 and assessed the visibility of each crossing on a rainy night in March travelling at about 25mph with dipped headlights.
