Guernsey trio get under way down under
Wednesday 13th April 2011, 2:29PM BST.
A JET-SETTING trio of Guernsey bowlers were prominent when the sport’s World Cup got under way at the Warilla club in New South Wales yesterday.
While wife Alison struggled in her opening match, Ian Merrien (pictured) pulled off a memorable win over the 2002 Commonwealth Games singles champion Bobby Donnelly, from South Africa, in the men’s event.
In a match that could have gone either way, Ian triumphed 7-4, 7-11, 2-1, and will be pleased to add such a distinguished scalp to his bowls CV.
After making such an upbeat start, he was disappointed to go down in straight sets, 4-10, 5-8, against the Malaysian Fairul Abdul Jabal in the afternoon session.
