Maryland not the last closure warns GMTA
Friday 15th April 2011, 1:00PM BST.
MARYLAND Service Station will not be the last petrol forecourt to close, according to Andrew Sparks, of the Guernsey Motor Trades Association.
The garage at Cobo is due to shut tomorrow after a long history in the area. It is thought to have been there for at least 70 years.
Its owners blamed the rising cost of fuel for them shutting.
‘It is always sad when a business closes when it has served a community as Maryland has,’ said Mr Sparks, a member of the GMTA’s executive committee.
‘But the growing customer demand for cheaper prices will inevitably squeeze margins and if volume fails to be maintained or increased there will come a point when it is no longer economical or viable to continue.’
