Substance abusers leave prison ‘and we never see them again’

Friday 15th April 2011, 2:29PM BST.

Tracey RearA HIGH dropout rate for former prisoners attending Drug Concern’s community support scheme after release is a disappointment.

Prisoners with drug and alcohol problems are currently able to meet with a substance misuse worker in prison.

Prior to release, a meeting takes place between the SMW, the prisoner and a Drug Concern community worker for a handover, meaning the prisoner can continue to see the community worker once they are free to ensure they do not fall into old habits.

Only those who are released on parole or probation are legally required to continue meetings.

Drug Concern manager Tracey Rear (pictured) said in her annual report that there was much enthusiasm from the prisoner for continued support immediately prior to release, but there were poor results for attendance post-release.

Sorry to harp on about Deecaf, but i felt deecaf was a help as we had young offenders return to us when they came out of prison and if the young person did not want to go to drug concern they were ususally happy for me to contact them for advice etc., so we acted as a go between. Funding is required for this charity as it has helped many people, but then Deecaf is required to to help take some off the load. Thats the trouble, nobody ever sees the bigger picture.
