MARYLAND customers made the most of the pumps on the service station’s last day of service.

Saturday was the last time the Cobo forecourt was open after more than 70 years in business, and customers took the opportunity to say their farewells to what they said was a part of the community.

HR assistant Nicola Crocker, 24, said it was sad that the station was closing down.

‘I use it quite a bit,’ she said. ‘I must come here once every four weeks.

‘It is a bit of a shame.’

Nathan- That’s exactly what I was thinking. 4 weeks isn’t very often at all.

Nathan and SB, maybe she also uses OTHER petrol stations, or her car`s got a jolly great big tank!

I think she has made herself look a bit stupid with that comment. Quite a bit I would say is at least weely. Every four weeks? Well its probably because many customers did the same that forced the station to close. We’ll see many more, localised stations going too soon.

Interesting article in last Friday’s Press about petrol prices

With fuel duty and VAT removed a litre costs 53p in the UK and 85p in Guernsey. The question was asked, how could it cost 32p a litre to ship it to a pump over here ?

Maryland has closed because they can’t make money on petrol sales so the garages are not profiteering

Are we being ripped off by our very own States funded shipping company?

I can’t believe how pedantic some people are being. For goodness sakes, this wasn’t a pre-prepared interview. Ms Crocker was probably accosted by a GP reporter and given hardly any time to formulate a response.

Besides, what’s wrong with filling your car once every 4 weeks? We own one of the “hated” 4x4s with a pretty large engine and we fill up with about the same regularity as Ms Crocker.

Also don’t forget we’re constantly being told to “go green” and use our cars less. I’m no tree hugger but in all honesty anyone on this island that needs to fill up once a week (apart from business users and taxi drivers) is most likely driving their car too much.

My actual words were I come here once a week – don’t always believe what you read in the press, as they obviously made a slight mistake there!!!

Thanks for the comment, Nic and for setting the record straight.

Pity for me though, as the irony is that, in an attempt to be chivalrous and leap to your defence, I have inadvertently suggested that you are driving your car too much.

Ah well, you win some you lose some eh! ;-)

Thanks for your comments too Paul, was nice to have a bit of back up and you were right, I wasn’t given time to prepare :-)!!

I don’t fill it up every week, but I at least put £10-£15 worth in!!

Thanks again, Nic – your eco-credentials have been saved! Our family, unfortunately, drives a 4×4 so I fear we will still be in trouble. ;-)

Paul, you shouldn`t worry about having a 4×4. It`ll come in useful next time the island is blessed with a covering of the white stuff ;-)

Some people are too quick to judge! Read other replies concerning Nic. The press got it wrong as can sometimes be the problem when covering so many stories

I am disappointed to see that the main focus of the comments posted so far has been on the frequency of fill-ups or apparent reporting errors. I have been visiting Maryland Service Station exclusively for some years now and am saddened by its closure. One of the things that made it special was that you could always be assured of a polite, friendly and efficient service from the staff.

I agree with guernseylass – a typo isn’t really the main issue here! so sad that maryland is closing down.

Nic your said to Paul that you don’t tell the press you fill up after 4 weeks and that you said once a week. Then you say “I don’t fill it up every week, but I at least put £10-£15 worth in”

So how often do you fill up your tank?
