FOR the first time in his career, Aaron Canavan went into the lion’s den and walked away Channel Island king.

And after his first final victory on Guernsey soil, over Adie Holley at Sporting Club on Friday, the Caesarean left no doubt that he is currently the CI’s best player, his third success in four years testament to that.

But to suggest that this was as comfortable as the 4-1 scoreline suggests would be grossly unfair, with Holley well in the match for long periods, broken only by a stunning 59 break in the fifth.

It was not the most free-flowing final the decent-sized crowd will ever see, but that probably suited Holley in the early stages and he was all-square after an opening two frames lasting nearly 90 minutes.
