More pressing issues?

On my last blog someone rightly suggested the following: why complain about small details like weddings when there are numerous wars and hardships around the world which are way more important?
Click.
Let’s think on that for a moment.
Let’s put ourselves in the position of people suffering hardships around the world; the victims of war, starving, rotting from disease, in desperate need of aid, waiting for someone somewhere to put their hands in their pockets and give them some much needed help.
Now think of all the money that is being wasted here.
All the bunting, the Kate and Will teatowels, Kate and Will mugs, Kate and Will cake, Kate and Willl money boxes, Kate and Will flags, Kate and Will plates, Kate and Will dolls, Kate and Will key rings, and all the other chintz out there.
Is it wrong to complain about the Royal Wedding?
Maybe you’re right.
Is it wrong to have a bank holiday for something most people will find irrelevant instead of a bank holiday for something like Red Nose Day so people can actually do something for the numerous wars and hardships around the world which are way more important?
I’ll leave that one for you to decide.

So missing the point.
Yes, war and famine are terrible things but I disagree with the premise that we should beat ourselves up because we are “wasting money” on frivolous Royal wedding celebrations.
The Royal wedding is not just about two privileged people tying the knot. It is about symbolism.
Whether you like it or not, for the vast majority of British people this event is one of the few occasions where we can celebrate our national identity. Lets face it, we are not allowed to do so at any other time for fear of being branded nationalistic or even racist by the politically correct elite who control our society. Other countries have no such qualms – perhaps it is the fact that we are so afraid to show pride in our identity that we over do it when we get a legitimate reason to do so.
The Royal Wedding, and the monarchy in general, tie us back to our historic roots. In a multi cultural, secular and individualistic Britain these things (anachronistic as they may be) are important as they provide us with a form of symbolism which we can share and celebrate. We are all part of the British ‘tribe’ and our tribal leaders are having a wedding – in just about every society in the world that is an excuse for a party and I for one am going to join in.
Save the guilt about the state of the world for another day.

The wedding of Kate and William was one of the most beautiful Royal Weddings that I have ever seen. Yes it was done on a wonderfully grand scale, and why not? Even down to those beautiful horses and riders sooo impressive!!! Makes Britons proud to be Brits. In these very dreary belt tightening times it was wonderful!!!!
I didn’t notice too many objections when Mugabi spent millions on his 90th birthday celebrations and his own people are starving, while he lives a MOST LAVISH daily lifestyle, and gets votes by refusing those that don’t vote for him a food ration coupon????????
