Patients face paying more

THE way islanders pay for their health care could change as a result of a Health and Social Services review.
In the department’s future 2020 vision of health care, which requests permission from the States to investigate a full reform, it claimed current levels of funding were unsustainable against the backdrop of an ageing population.
Some options for the alternative methods of funding include fully tax- or statutory health insurance-based, partial statutory insurance, where some parts of the service are charged, or fully private insurance-funded system.
But chief officer Mark Cooke (pictured) said no recommendations on which would be more appropriate could be made until more research was carried out.

Drop the aging population smoke screen.
Fact is that the whole population (bar the oldest) are generally unfit and over wieght to varying degrees. This is where the escalating cost of health care is going to come from.

How about offering tax relief for people who pay for their own private medical insurance as an incentive. We pay about 8% of our annual income into a private insurance scheme but consider it is important to have the option of private cover if required. Tax relief would be a good incentive.
