MOST people living near St Saviour’s Tavern would welcome the return of a pub.
But an Environment Department report released ahead of today’s open planning meeting on the site recommends planning permission be granted to convert the site into three residential units.
The report said that representations from a resident and the douzaine both expressed disappointment that a pub was not to be provided.
‘I would rather it be a tavern,’ said Denise Johnson who has lived in the area for 15 years.

Are any of these people prepared to put any of their own money into getting their tavern back?

After listening to the 6pm news, what the heck has whether a pub would be a viable proposition got to do with a Planning department!
That decision is down to who ever might invest in it as a business and surely not the Planning department.
Short sighted planning decision. This is a site/building of business opportunity. Not like the Island is overful of business premises now is it, now it will be one less.

Would that not mean having to purchase the building from developers, who would no doubt add the profit they are intending to make by turning this building into 3 incongrouous units on to the value of the land??

Maybe this explains my thoughts Mr Lloyd. I used to enjoy the odd foray from the Vale up to St Saviour’s for a pint at the old Tavern but even then it was clear that the future viability of the place, because of its location and changing social trends, was very doubtful. In other words, how can you expect others to plough money into what would be a loss making operation for the benefit of a dwindling clientele?

Quite….. Money talks.
A sad end for what used to be a quaint old establishment. Wont be the first and it sure as heck wont be the last.

Give Up I say… enough is enough now !

Further to articles and comments in the last week regarding the conversion of St. Saviours Tavern in to 3 Flats, I would like to understand how a pub deemed viable in the car park across the road from the Tavern, but not on the site it is on now. Surely it would be profitable or non-profitable no matter which side of the road it was situated
