Businesses critical of 10-week work on sea defences

Wednesday 27th April 2011, 1:00PM BST.

Road Closed From Route de la Rocque to Perelle Garage St Peters SHUTTING the coast road for up to 10 weeks to repair sea defences between L’Eree and Perelle has angered some nearby businesses.

But people living in the area were much happier about the work.

Route de La Rocque, La Croix Martin and Rue du Catioroc closed yesterday as work on the defences near Le Catioroc started.

L’Eree Bay Hotel owner, managing director and chef Mark Frost said the timing of the work left him speechless.

I seem to recall that stretch of road was closed not so long ago. Why don’t the various States departments check with each other and do their work at the same time?

Would like to know why this job has to be done at the start of the summer season, I really think its a crazy idea, is it that bad that it has to be carried out now?

SB. Don’t be ridiculous, that would involve communication and forward planning. The states wouldn’t know what that was if it bit them on the backside.

SS – actually, as far as road closures go, my experience is that the various departments and utilities do speak to each other a lot better here than they do in the UK – where people often experience roads being dug up in quick succession. I suggest that it is a case of assuming that we have it bad here, when in fact we have it pretty good.

There are also good reasons why this was not done earlier in the year. Storms are more common in winter or early spring than they are in early summer, and so if you were having to repair sea defences you would not choose to do it when you are more likely to be caught with your pants down, so to speak.

As this work is mostly on the seaward side, with perhaps some space required for equipment etc, can’t we have temporary traffic lights and at least a single lane of the road?

    Hey, Traffic? What say you?

Take your point Terry but surely you have to weigh up the fact that Guernsey promotes itself as a tourist venue especially from Easter onwards.

Louise – do you have any grounds fro thinking that they did not think about that? They are not as stupid as some people assume. The works need doing and if there are good technical reasons for why it could not have been done earlier then that would outweigh the inconvenience during the tourist season. It is too easy to simply criticise.

These things need to be done when the weather is likely to be suitable; Mr Frost obviously is either new to the island or spends his winters elsewhere because by his comments in this report and in the GEP he obviously has no idea of the type of weather along this coast in the winter.
Yes, Guernsey does promote itself as a tourist destination but people still live here, infrastructure needs repairing work needs to be done. Go to other places in the world and live isn’t put on hold for tourists, the French and Swiss Alps in May and June for instance are full of roadwork repairs before the busy July August holiday periods.
Just accept this has to be done, the route over La Felconte from Perelle offers better views of the coast and is probably a quicker route from perelle to L’Eree bay anyway.

I wonder what the opinion would be if these works weren`t carried out correctly and when needed and the road collapsed.

If the work needs doing then get it done before the whining people find they`re responsible for total collapse.

Visitors have plenty of time on their hands to take a short detour and locals in the area will find a way around any inconvenience.

If I see anyone “squeezing” through road closures be sure you`ll be reported with camera proof. I live in this road, I know most of the residents and will be monitoring the traffic.

Go on, try it and see if I don`t “get” you.

nocon. Oh you’ll be monitoring the traffic will you? Well thank god for that. I’ll sleep easy now.

Who gave you the job of “traffic monitoring”? What other people do is none of your business – the fact you live in that road is irrelevent.

You need to get out more, or get a hobby other than nose poking/do gooder. Oh and by the way, you obviously aren’t doing a very good job, I cycled through there yesterday and I’m yet to hear any complaints. When I cycle through later I will take great pleasure knowing its annoying you.

    @SS & Mr G
It’s just your sort of attitude that makes other more reaonably minded people fume at your inconsiderate “Me Me” mentality.
I’ve no doubt you’d be the first to complain if you happened to injure yourself on some piece of heavy equipment while cycling or driving through a closed road.
Nocon has every right to keep watch, the police often rely on information to prosecute people like yourself who obviously think you are above the law.

I’m with DA666 and Nocon on this.

SS and Mr G the road is CLOSED. Have a read of the sign – it is an offense to drive or ride through it.

You will be “offensive” if you chose to do it – and rightly so. I hope you do get reported and prosecuted. Just use the diversion – it’s actually quicker!!!

    Oh my!

What a bunch of narrow minded, pathetic, naive and indoctrinated little Hitlers the locals have become. Or have they always been this way? I suppose you have… it is just with the ease of communication the ether brings you can voice your Nazi like idealisms for all the world to hear.

Honestly! What a joke you all are!

I am going to take that road from now on out of a matter of principle

Lord Sugar has recetly claimed that there are far too many civil servants, and that these could be cut by a huge amount, if employed by the private sectre. Maybe something that would appeal to Coates, he is twiddling his thumbs after Healthspan and it would afford him the status he so desperately wants here.
