A MENTAL health strategy to help sufferers live more independently will be a key part of sustainable healthcare in the future.

In the Health and Social Service Department’s future 2020 vision of health care, disability and mental health issues are highlighted as two areas that could be improved.

The report has called for the States to allow the department to investigate a full reform as it claimed the island’s healthcare in its current form would be unsustainable in the future due to greater demand on the service.

Part of the proposed solution is to focus more on preventative and primary care, therefore treating developing mental health problems earlier before they have a chance to fully develop into a need for long-term treatment.
