Walk this way
Thursday 28th April 2011, 10:55AM BST.
GUERNSEY women are being asked to walk this way for charity.
The Pink Ladies’ Sunset Coastal Walk is back by popular demand and will this year take place on Saturday 18 June.
Walk organisers Doreen Le Poidevin and Amanda Brown are both founder members of the local breast cancer support group and say the event is as much about raising awareness, as it is about raising money.
The Sunset Walk was first launched back in 2007 but back then organisers could never have predicted just what a huge success it would be.
They had hoped for 500 walkers but, on the day, more than 2,000 turned out and more than £100,000 was raised – something they are hoping to top with this, the third fund-raising walk.
Amanda said the event is a great way to unite the women of Guernsey. And it is especially important this year as the charity is also celebrating its 10th anniversary.
All money raised stays in the island and helps with everything from buying equipment for the breast care unit, to paying for home-help for those recovering from treatment.
The walk will finish with a celebration in Market Square where food and drink will be available for the walkers, with entertainment provided by Abba tribute band, Sensation.
‘We are hoping as many ladies as possible will stay after the walk and join in, said Amanda. ‘There is going to be a real party atmosphere.’
There are two walking routes. The first starts from Grandes Rocques car park at 6pm and is approximately 10.5 miles long.
The second is approximately 3.5 miles and starts at 8pm at Bordeaux, which will be joined by those from the first walk before going on to the finish line in Market Square.
All ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
The Pink Ladies is registered with the Association of Guernsey Charities. The helpline number is 07781 415131 or you can visit www.pinkladies.org.gg for more information.
