A 33-YEAR wait to allow motor homes on local campsites is over.

The Environment Department has granted permission for Vaugrat and Fauxquets Valley to have eight motor homes each, within strict guidelines.

The news has pleased John Laine, owner of Le Vaugrat site. The former deputy first raised the issue in 1978 and has kept the subject in the public eye ever since. His persistence has finally paid off.

‘We’re very pleased,’ he said. ‘It’s taken time but we understand that these things can’t be done overnight. The discussions we’ve had with the [Environment] department have been positive.’

Mr Laine,a former Deputy, sums up the States perfectly in saying after a 33 year wait …

Good oh, let’s wait and see what rolls off the ferry on the next bank holiday Friday evening, complete with self assembly tarmac, etc. Could take another 33 years to get rid of travellers, in any form.

Is there anything in practical terms to stop the entire cast of Big Fat Gypsy Weddings turning up now? Then claiming asylum on the basis that they can’t go back to the UK because of ‘race prejudice’? And all those poor victims who had their faces pixelated on TV signing up for benefits whilst doing dodgy tarmac jobs on the side? Why must Guernsey copy every negative aspect of the UK? If the UK is a spongers paradise, are we its VIP lounge? Sheer folly, we will live to regret it.
