Move to delay decision on extra-care housing
Tuesday 17th May 2011, 2:30PM BST.
PLANS to re-develop Maison Maritaine and Longue Rue House have been plunged into crisis.
A motion has been submitted by deputy Health and Social Services minister Andrew Le Lievre to delay debate on the report because of concerns about funding, an issue that has left the lead department, Housing, split from the majority of HSSD, which also signed off the plans.
Deputy Le Lievre (pictured) said that without a model for exactly how the extra-care homes for the elderly will be funded, the States should not agree to start the project.
He wants debate delayed in order for the Treasury and Resources and Social Security Departments to come up with a funding plan.

Seems to make sense to have a proper funding plan before you spend £35M on a project.

In some respects I agree with you Gary – but, haven’t we known and heard about all of us living longer for ages now?
Some of us are very fortunate to have elderly relatives, mums, dads etc, still with us. When the time comes for them to feel that they would rather lead their own lives, thank you very much, away from their cares of a long lifetime of keeping up a home of their own, they should not be in a position to be having to worry about what the options are.

Stiletto,
I think you misunderstand me, I’m not against the projects, yes we must prepare for the future for our elderly, but we must also have a plan that has taken all aspects of cost, especially ongoing costs into consideration and how those costs will be met, that seems to be what the worry is at present.

No Gary, I did not misunderstand you, your point is a very valid one.
My concerns, echoed I am sure by many of us who have elderly family, is that they tend to devour our local paper from start to finish, especially if they don’t, due to various infirmaties get out and about overmuch.
Historically, they believe everything they read. To most of them the GEP is an authoratitive point of reference. There are real, genuine concerns out there, in that there might not be a place for them when they need one.
