New owner of Oatlands has some big plans
Wednesday 18th May 2011, 11:30AM BST.
OATLANDS’ new owner has pledged to expand on the facilities already offered at the tourist attraction as he aims to give visitors a real ‘Guernsey experience’.
Ironbridge Estate Holdings Ltd completed its purchase of Oatlands last Tuesday and its chairman Peter Kaufman-Kent, pictured, said he was looking forward to developing its offering and contributing to the island’s tourist industry.
Despite having lived in Guernsey for 12 years, Mr Kaufman-Kent (pictured) is probably best known for investing about £30m. to have the Radisson Hotel built in Jersey.
‘I have spent five years investing money in Jersey’s tourist industry, but I live in Guernsey and it’s nice to be able to make a contribution to the Guernsey tourist economy,’ he said.

Good luck to him. The present Oatlands is tired and past its sell-by. This sort of investment can only be good for the island and let us all hope that by the time the new facility is in place people will be able to go there on Sundays without any of the mad trading restrictions that they have to endure at Le Friquet.

Having recently spent a short break in Jersey, I was astounded at the difference between our tourist industries. There was so much on offer in Jersey for all ages, and all the parks I saw were beautifully maintained (Howard Davies Park in particular) Sure, creating or maintaining an attraction of beauty and interest costs a lot of money, but there would be dividends! I’m delighted to hear that Oatlands will be getting a spruce up. Come on Guernsey!

Then he will encounter the Environment and Commerce & Employment departments.

Mr K-K could well take on board Oatlands Bisto arrangments to start with.
He should not overlook that whilst tourists, who are becoming an endangered species here anyway, do have organised trips which take in Oatlands – they do not run everyday.
I was recently on the site, buying some cards, and decided to take a coffee break, I was informed that I could not be served since a tour group was due shortly and they were closed for local trade. The group arrived some half an hour afterwards, needless to say, I will go to a nearby seaside cafe in future.

As a grandson of the last owner of the old Oatlands Farm, I’d like to ask Mr Kaufman-Kent to do his best to preserve the old spirit of the place. Please don’t change too much, don’t monkey around with it and try to avoid all tackiness. Keep it tasteful. Please.
