Expert witnesses disagree over surgeon’s thyroidectomy skills

TWO expert witnesses disagreed yesterday whether local ear, nose and throat surgeon Richard Vowles breached his duty of care to patient Sharon Williams.
Mr Vowles is said to have permanently damaged one of Mrs Williams’ vocal cords during an operation to remove a lump on her thyroid.
General surgeon John Lynn, who has performed 10,000 thyroidectomies, backed up Mrs Williams’ claim that it was Mr Vowles’ fault.
But UK ear nose and throat surgeon Jean-Pierre Jeannon, testified that Mr Vowles had not breached his duty of care.
