Bomb scare at La Mare de Carteret

Friday 20th May 2011, 11:11AM BST.

La mare de carteret schoolLA MARE de Carteret school was evacuated this morning after a bomb threat.

Chief Inspector Nigel Taylor said that just before 9.30am the school received a call about a threat of a device.

Pupils were evacuated to the playing fields as a precaution.

‘Police are assisting with a search of the school and will try to ensure a return to normality as soon as possible,’ he said.

‘The children and staff are safe and well – enjoying a slightly longer playtime – in the sunshine.’

? “sat in the sun for hours with nothing to do”

I thought it was sports day – seems to me like they probably could have got through a sack race and egg toss while the police were sweeping the building?!

Can anyone confirm whether these sorts of events are still a part of sports days? I always took great amusement from the mother’s run – none of the mums would want to seem at all keen or competitive, but as soon as the starter’s gun sounded all rules went out of the window, and hoards of female fury would bound down the track in their best summer frocks, those who opted for a heeled shoe always left tottering at the back of the pack.

The egg and spoon race always seemed to bring forth everyone’s propensity to cheat. despite the teacher’s cries to “stop holding the egg” we would sprint as fast as our legs would take us with little regard to the notion of balancing the egg. Why balance the egg when I could just as easily hold it in place with this spare hand of mine?! One kid would always play by the rules, come in last, storm off and sulk for the rest of the day. Good memories (if a little influenced by re-runs of “You’ve Been Framed”).

@ Ponderous – I’m afraid you’re sadly out of date. My little darlings are at LMDC primary and dangerous concepts such as racing, with its controversial ‘winning’ and ‘losing’, have been banned in case they damage the children’s psyche. Instead everyone participates in safe group activities such as throwing bean bags into hoops. At the end house points are counted up and the winning house cheered. And the losing house. All the houses in fact. So touching. So dull for all concerned. My children usually start weeping and beg to leave about 10 minutes in. I feel their pain.

I’m with the ‘ARV’ theory on this one. I don’t like cynicism parading as wisdom, but it seems a tad convenient that in the days after everyone questioned the necessity of them, lo! a reason appeared. The rumour I heard was a written note saying a bomb was hidden in the senior school. What next? The Taliban hijacking a trislander and flying it into Beaucamps?

It used to be ‘Germans and British’ in my day but why not ‘Navy Seals and al quaeda’ to bring these playground games bang up to date? You could even try ‘Guernsey police SWAT team v North Plantation louts and phone hoaxers’ as a brand new take. Or if you want something without violence why not try hopscotch and skipping and tig and kiss chase? Really, in that situation and with a little imagination there are tons of things to do. I really do fear for the current young generation.

My son attends LM and my first thought when I heard via the Guernsey Grapevine was – Sports Day – no one wants to do it – its got to be a hoax! and yet…. and yet…. I started to consider how no one ever thinks it could actually happen; what about those poor kids at Dunblane – just another boring day at school but some didn’t ever get home….. what about 7/7 which cost about £10k to finance, hardly a fortune really to cause so much heartache…. however I was one of the parents who did not rush to the school to pick up my child. I reckoned like everyone else it was just another hoax. Thank God this was the case. i trust that the person responsible will be dealt with very strongly; my first thoughts would be to look at Facebook to try and ascertain who is boasting about this?!

It seems inconceivable that the police would set up something like this themselves to show off their toys and tactics. It also beggars belief that firefighters would commit arson in order to act the hero or whatever … yet there are many, many cases where this has been proven, particularly with terrible bushfires. Who knows, these things tend not to stay secret for long in Guernsey.

If I planted a bomb then I would now know where to plant it or them, it would be in the playing fields where everyone evacuated to, who would think of looking there? I bet the police didn`t even with their all terrain new vehicles.

The playing fields at LMDC stretch right down to the beach at Cobo so why couldn`t the parents pick their darlings up and take them home from there?

    Just a Guy

Nocon, you are a genius. How did the rest of us not realise that when an anonymous call says there’s a bomb ‘in the school’, we should not be evacuating students to a predetermined safe spot, but instead take all 500+ pupils (presumably with the 17 or so island coachways buses that are to hand) to a secret location. This way we could get on with immediately checking its playing fields for mines with our ‘all terrain new vehicles’. Good thinking, you obviously have much more idea than Guernsey’s police force. Have you perhaps considered applying for a job with them?

Also, despite the fact you have considered the ideal place to plant a bomb in order to harm school pupils, it is obvious to me you understand young people. Chloe complained that there was ‘nowhere to go to the toilet’, and you suggested peeing behind a bush. However, this may not always be a suitable solution to roughly 250 teenage girls. You may wish to search for ‘menstrual cycle’ using Google if you would like to educate yourself further.

Anyway, I just think you should perhaps have a little more sympathy towards the both the parents and their ‘darlings’. They were threatened by a bomb attack after all.

Its all ok to say its only a hoax, we all know that now and probably all knew it at the time, but it was a scary time. None of the children were bored on La Mare Primary Sport’s day. Every child thoroughly enjoyed it because it had the right amount of competitiveness to provide inclusion for all and not just those that can run fast. Their sport’s day was fantastic which was easy to see from all the children smiling and encouraging everyone in their team. Sports is not all about running – there are many skills to be learned and the games on sport’s day provided for a multitude of these. If you’d been following the airport runway debate elsewhere on this forum you might have noticed, for instance, that I’d changed my stance on that issue in the face of reasoned argument. I’ve never seen you do that. I also notice (but I’m not very interested in the fact) that you have a rather pompous air of semi detached self importance on whichever subject you post but we’d better let that one go because it’s not going to change.

As for Adam West (any relation to batman?), as soon as someone posts something you don’t like you yell ‘troll’ in the same way that an immature left wing student yells ‘fascist’ the moment he/she hears something he/she doesn’t like. On the contrary Martino, it would appear that your first post was a full on condescending commentary that the ‘namby pamby’ kids had nothing to do and that imagination was scarce. Further posts indicate that further mentality.

It must be a beautiful thing to hide in the anonymity of your avatar to almost bully obviously younger posters in the thread.

The fact remains that there was a bomb scare/threat and the children were taken to the designated safety point. I would envisage that they were (more than likely) told to remain calm and orderly.
I suspect that having a game of ‘navy seals and al quaeda’ would more than likely add a further headache for the teaching staff to manage and keep a full tally.

It was good common sense to have evacuated the building whilst the investigation (however unlikely) was conducted.

You would appear to be the type of person that would sneer at the authority figures if something tragic would have happened? After all something like two jumbo jets flying into two really big buildings would never happen ever – right?

I’ve no problem with people disagreeing with me and actually will acknowledge a different viewpoint and agree to disagree. I think that your comments simply added nothing from the outset to the topic at hand and even by nocon’s admission that he was ‘winding people up’.

You don’t read the posts of other people very well do you Adam West?
I never said you were a left winger – just compared your mentality to that of a ‘right on’ lefty student, but let’s let that one pass.

You’re also fond of making assumptions about others (“You would appear to be the type of person…”) so let’s make one or two about you.

You would appear to be the type of person who is a PC thinker, probably a teacher, who does not do black humour or irony very well. In fact you do not do any sort of humour very well unless it ticks all the correct boxes and does not offend anyone.

Clearly you take a very dim view of nasty adult bullies who say horrible things about your pupils and you will go out of your way to defend these poor young people. However, you go all quiet when confronted by the despicable behaviour of teenage bullies – like the ones who beat a Guernsey householder unconscious after invading the privacy of his home. Just a case of hi jinks on the part of those little dears, I suppose?

As a footnote can I just say that condescension can be quite an effective debating tool. Especially when dealing with precious young things who come on to forums such as this to mix it with the adults and expect to get nothing back. I think I’ve done them a favour actually, which is far more than you are doing with your own pointless posts. Time to go back to Gotham City Batman. Try telling it to the Riddler and the Joker. I think you’ll have more success there.

Thanks nocon, took the bait, hook line and sinker. I was actually referring to Martino in regards to the trolling accusation. So apologies for the lack of clarity.

Martino. Thank you for the response.

I’ll clarify that my definition was actually sound. It doesn’t state about responding to a post, just posting to provoke. Which is exactly what you have done.

I’ll clear up your assumption (as you couldn’t resist) that I’m borderline PC and not a teacher. It’s not I’m not afraid to upset people, much the same you are Martino. The difference is the method. I’m not interested in upsetting people needlessly to get a kick out of it behind a PC monitor/avatar. The message can be better explained and discussed.

I will elaborate that yes, i do take the stated view of nasty adult bullies, much the same as i do on teenage bullies or bullies of any age. I’ve not responded in the other thread as I had not had the opportunity to read the GEP and obtain the relevant information to contribute.

It does indeed sound dispicable, but I feel that as usual the GEP will do the usual tabloid trickery of scaremongering the populace whilst the factual information is swept away in hyperbole.

I’ll agree to disagree on whether being condescending is conducive to a decent debate. I agree talking to the Riddler and Joker will produce more sense than trying to obtain a balanced viewpoint here. Pity really.

It is not humor when you’re poking fun at someone and the other person is obviously not ‘getting’ it. That is bullying. This isn’t exactly the correct forum for that sort of irony and humor as it can’t translate very well. Also a bunch of teenage girls from 11-16 playing Navy Seals and Al Quaeda?…I can tell from having little and older sisters that would never happen. Nor would the teachers have allowed it and nor is it very appropriate. The last time I played cops and robbers I think I was 8. I had absolutley no interest in playing make believe games into my teenage years. Urine kills plants and grass. A few hundred students going for a whizz would have devestating effects. Again, I doubt it would have been condoned by the teachers. Plus if you have that many people in one area it’s going to be difficult to find some privacy which I’m sure Martino you can appreciate that girls need. Tad easier for us guys.

Nocon you are winding these girls up, it may be fun for you but for the rest of us you’re just looking like an idiot. Carry on if you must but I hardly see what it brings to the table.

Oh and for reference I can eat humble pie in the face of reasoned argument, I just haven’t seen any in any of your posts. Apparantly though we have something in common as you also
have a rather pompous air of semi detached self importance.

You don’t get it do you Nick Le P?

When faced with a comment that is a touch ironic or a tad tongue in cheek you take it oh so literally. I think your humour gene was lost in favour of an extra pomposity gene at birth so do let me explain in unequivocal terms that you might understand.

Yes, unlike you I do want Guernsey to be ‘up with the times’ when it comes to embracing progressive measures such as freedom to trade on Sundays, which is your bete noir.

But do I really want to see kids going back to playing hopscotch or Germans and British? Duh, no, but what I do want to see is the kids of today (and their parents) getting a bit of perspective and appreciating that being turfed out of their classrooms for a few hours on a fine spring day in a warm temperate climate while the search is on for a hoaxer’s bomb is hardly akin to being abandoned in the middle of a desert days from civilisation. Is that clear enough now?

Martino – the irony of your last post is that you haven’t considered that my posts are in the same vein as yours. Sometimes a tad tongue in cheek but you take them so seriously.

Firstly i’d like to state i’m neither PC, sexist or God…although i am opinionated and i intend to express one opinion now.

Martino – i have no problem with your arguement but i do believe you to be a rather “dumb” individual. No you did not predict May 21st would not happen…May 21st was never EVER going to happen, the same for October 21st. I was raised catholic but this is just some money-grabbing scheme by some redneck god obsessed idiot who probably believes he’s some kind of prophet…I think everyone believed that it was a hoax, we don’t even have gun crime over here so what’s the odds of somebody bombing a school…this isn’t exactly a die hard 3 situation.

Nocon – wiping yourself up with the school tie??? really?? perhaps some hygeine classes are in order for you. I do believe public urination is also illegal (now before you jump the gun i am referring to instances where no toilet is available..yes i know there are things as public toilets)

As mentioned before everyone is entitled to their opinion even though some abuse that liberty.

Just have to shove my oar in here, call it flippant if you like.

What’s the betting that this happens again this time next year? It has become a pattern.

    LMDC could circumvent this possibilty by;

The whole school departing over the road to the beach, there they could hold Sports Day, albeit with a different slant.

Plenty of places for a pee at the cafes who would I think, be happy to provide this convenience if the PTA got together and arranged for them to have publicity, which will be much needed, Cobo has once again failed water safety testing, and the way things are going, will again be in this deplorable state.
