BIDDERS packed into the Martel Maides auction rooms yesterday hoping to get their hands on the first batch of zero licence plates.
The Environment Department announced it would be releasing registration numbers beginning 0 and 00 after lawyer Sam Dingle made the tongue-in-cheek suggestion in a letter to the Guernsey Press last month.
Bidding for the first number, 080, opened at £13,000.
It was eventually bought for £16,000 – the highest price of the day – by hedge fund manager Nick England.

Agreed, fools and their money are soon parted. Anybody spending serious money on number plates when the numbering system can be changed on a whim must be crazy. Any time now the EU could just insist that anybody driving in Europe has plates that conform to a standard system. Then the States will just fall in line and these crazy ‘investments’ will be straight down the pan. Finally, the States are doing something sensible in flogging off numbers while they still can.

No Pete, some people are simply paid too much for what they do. If you can afford to pay £16000 on a frivolity you can afford to pay more income tax

If some people have the spare cash to pay additional indirect taxes, it is all good for the Island. Lets see some more ideas like this to boost the public purse.
How about renting out all the empty areas of marina where smaller boats and Jetskis can fit or Paid parking in some areas like Beausy.

Another leap forward towards the integrated traffic policy.
In only 10 years we have seen;
33 oversized busses,
Some bus shelters.
More filters.
An additional 30,000 vehicles registered.
An online computer progam to show which roads are closed.
Dismantling of the motor tax.
The same 300 miles of narrow roads, more of them now one way.
Sales of plates starting with zero.
What amazing integrated minds we have here.
