Early fine weather gets the parish buzzing – with flies

UNUSUALLY warm weather earlier in the year has caused a problem for St Andrew’s.

The parish has experienced a lot more flies than usual. It has been put down to the consistently warm weather and the farmland in the area.

St Andrew’s senior constable Richard Best said the douzaine had contacted Environmental Health and been told that the rest of the island was likely to be experiencing the same thing.

‘It’s a mixture of being in between two farms and a chicken farm, combined with the early spring weather,’ he said.

Quite frankly I think it has something to do with the Chickens being outside at the chicken farm and not the farm land. I have been a resident here for 20 years and never had a problem before. Apart from when they cleared the barns before re-opening and we had swarms of flies covering everything. The flies are disgusting. second only to the fact that we always have people having bon-fires in this parish also! We hardly get a chance to open our windows around here.

If you live in / close to rural areas, flies go hand in hand with livestock!

Despite the cold winter snap, they turned up early here like late Apr/early May in our “spring” summer

Last year not a prob till late June/early July.
Net curtains do work and it only takes a bit of thought to make fly screens too (dirt cheap, work better on windy days)
