Crowds are fascinated by photography festival cube

Tuesday 31st May 2011, 2:29PM BST.

Guernsey Photography Festival cube at North Beach.

CROWDS of people were admiring the recently completed six-metre cube on North Beach yesterday.

The installation is part of the second Guernsey Photography Festival, which begins tomorrow.

The cube was the first of 30 exhibits to be completed, and is being used to display the work of photographer Martin Parr.

On Sunday morning, workers started hanging the pictures and yesterday the cube was complete.

With the Normandy Market taking place, lots of locals and tourists were stopping to study the photographs, which included a tourist trying to take photographs while being pestered by pigeons, a married couple on a beach and an indoor beach.

i love the work of martin parr, some people question his style but i find it so inspirational. I can’t wait to get back for the summer to have a look at the piece, and attend all the talks from various photographers that are going on. well done to the festival team this year. !!

Who`s paying for this construction and how much did it cost to erect?
I hope my taxes aren`t being used when restraint is being advocated by The States.

Ok I know the Arts and Photography are not everyones cup of tea but I like to think of myself as respectful of anothers tastes.
This Photo block however requires my feedback…Its awful, where is the art and skill in the photographer? Ive seen photos of a similiar standard taken with a £4.99 disposable camera by my 7 year old neice.
Your not allowed to paint your house a certain color over here so why can you put up 20 foot high holiday photos that have no artistic value whatsoever on our picteresque sea front.
Same with the War photos in the market last year. Although they were good photos, the subject was awful for such a pretty place in town.
At least replace this photo block with photos of a decent standard with an interesting subject, anything but these sub standard holiday photos that has nothing to do with anything !

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the beginnings of this festival and am quite happy and content for MY tax money to be put to this purpose.

In my opinion Martin Parr is a fantastic photographer and I’ve followed his work for many years. I for one am proud how Guernsey is embracing the arts more and more each year.

It’s also a success that this is causing controversy! I appreciate that for some people art is just about creating something aesthetically pleasing. However, that’s not what art is to everyone. To other’s it’s about creating a visual language and making statements through images and suggestions.

Artists talks are a great way to understand someone’s work. Even if you don’t agree with it! After all…that’s what it’s all about. :)

As a photography student I think its great that the Photography festival is on again to showcase the work of some great internationally acclaimed photographers.
As for notsostoopid’s comment on the work of Martin Parr, I think you should take a moment to consider the motive of the work before disregarding it so quickly. I am not personally a fan of Parr’s work, however you have to take into account what he is commenting on and the message he is trying to convey. Although its not aesthetically pleasing all the time, his work takes a very well considered, though usually very biased, look at his subject matter.
Hopefully a lot of people will go to the talks and enjoy the rest of the festival!

Martin Parr’s images work brilliantly on the Cube. His style of course feels immediately familiar to anyone who has recorded their own holidays with a camera. The choice of highly saturated, high street consumer film as his medium of choice is chosen for this very reason. However to dismiss the images as average snaps that anyone could take is way off the mark. Parr’s eye for composition, his sense of the absurd and the surreal and his ‘decisive moment’ timing are exceptional. I’m sure many of the people that have dismissed these images for the reasons already mentioned would have taken a very different view had they been presented as ‘serious’ monochrome photographs.
