Replacing worn-out sewers could cost £10m. a year

REPLACING the island’s sewage network could cost £10m. a year for the next five years, Guernsey Water has said.
But director of water services Andrew Redhead (pictured) said if the island did not invest now it could end up costing a lot more.
‘Over the years we haven’t been investing anywhere near as much as we should have been and now we are finding the system is creaking and, in some cases, failing quite catastrophically because of it,’ he said.
‘We are really at a point in time where we have carried out an internal investigation of the sewage network and found that large sums of money need to be invested.’

A pattern is emerging here…
‘Over the years we haven’t been investing anywhere near as much as we should have been and now we are finding the system is creaking…’
Sounds rather like the Airport runway scenario…

Eeeerm, why then have they spent a huge amount of money on their recent change of location, when this matter is still to be addressed?

Typical States department inefficiency, sit on their @%$ses for years wasting money on allsorts, now after years of neglect major works need to be done no doubt at our(taxpayer)expense.
Familiar pattern eh…schools for example.

You don’t get ought for nought.

This is a blatant build up to a considerable increase on water rates. Within the next few months I’m sure it will come to light.

Well lets hope that only those on main drain will have to pay for the sewer maintenance!

Gilthead,
Why? What do those with pits do with their poo?
Have it collected and dumped into the sewers, thats what.

Steve – True but I’ve been paying for X years where as those using the main drain haven’t.
Well until recently anyway!
And now we’ve got the situation where those with a pit and a metered supply are getting a double whammy…
I hate to quote PBFalla but this has all the makings of another shambles.

Thinking about it, here is another example of shinny new building before essential maintenance…. roll back a few years and we have a shinny new airport terminal building before essential runway maintenance.

Well I see it like this, and I expect a bit of stick for my outbreak so…
If there were decent governing bodies to sort things out, not like we have now who buy a bag of sweets and give to the poor, now what do I mean?
Well in a way we’re all to blame, we allow them to come and make the Island a Finance centre, sell all the best property to them, and get their ‘Back chat ‘ for nothing.
But now if the States really want to please the Islanders, now is the time Golden opportunities seldom come, but there is one now for Guernsey.
These finance people can’t go back to the UK.
Good old Osborne will have them by the ‘Coolies’ far worse than we should ask for and should get.
Now it’s pay off time Tax them higher, and get things done.
Oh and if you do; don’t raise your wages, people are watching you,
It is no longer a ‘CAP IN HAND’ affair people are wiser. Do as you are asked or get out.

Well, this is money down the drain! Tee hee.
